The New York City council reelected Christine Quinn as its speaker on Wednesday afternoon with 47 votes. Quinn, who is gay, touted the city council's diversity in her acceptance speech.

"Today I'm proud to say we've never had a city council that so fully reflects the diversity of our great city," she said. "For the first time, our black, Latino, and Asian caucus will comprise more than half our membership. Eighteen of us are women, and four of us are members of the LGBT community. We are tenant leaders and labor organizers, teachers and small business owners."

While she won her reelection campaign as a council member in the fall, her term as speaker expired December 31. Charles Barron, her only challenger, received one vote, according to The New York Observer. According to the report, Quinn accepted her position as Barron's supporters fled the balcony.
