Award-winning out actress Cynthia Nixon wants Florida's ban on adoption by gays to end, and she went to Miami Beach earlier this month to lend her voice and celebrity to that cause.

The eloquent star of Sex and the City was at Miami Beach's Shore Club on January 9 to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union, which is in the midst of a legal case that could repeal the 32-year-old ban, enacted in the days of Anita Bryant. In 2008 a Miami judge ruled a gay father could continue to raise his foster children, and a decision is expected soon on the state's challenge of the Miami ruling in the third district court of appeals.

"Florida is the only state in the union that categorically bans gay men and lesbians from adopting children," Nixon said. "It's a tremendous crime."
