When California state senator Roy Ashburn was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of drunk driving, his blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.14%, far beyond the 0.08% required for charges, according to a Los Angeles Times blog.
Ashburn, a Republican lawmaker from Bakersfield with a history of voting against gay causes, was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers in Sacramento while driving his state-owned car, which has since been impounded in the state garage. Officers saw Ashburn's car make several brake applications with no debris or traffic blocking the vehicle's path of the vehicle and pulled the senator over for taking over a minute to make a right turn without any cross traffic.
It had been reported that Ashburn had been in a gay bar, but some media outlets have disputed that.
