While two thirds of Catholics believe that Pope Benedict XVI should remain the head of the Roman Catholic Church despite a widespread sexual abuse scandal, a majority of those polled disapprove of how the claims have been handled.

Additionally, 72% disapprove of the American Catholic bishops' response to the abuse allegations, and 56% disapprove of the pope's reaction to the situation. Only 15% think the pope acted appropriately.

The Zogby poll was conducted April 30 to May 3 among 705 Catholics across the United States.
