Ramin Setoodeh, the gay journalist whose controversial article in Newsweek stated that gay actors cannot convincingly play straight characters, appeared on The Joy Behar Show to defend himself after a week of intense media scrutiny about his intent. During the interview Setoodeh said the point of his article was not to say that gay actors can't play straight but to examine "why straight actors can play gay characters like the ones in Brokeback Mountain, but it's very rare for a gay actor to do the same in reverse."
Behar's other guests were sex advice columnist Dan Savage and former Married With Children actress-turned-director Amanda Bearse. Bearse, who came out as a lesbian in 1993, says it's ridiculous to say that gay actors can't play straight and that Setoodeh's article "is going to keep more people in the closet."
