A 27-year-old lesbian activist has been denied asylum in the United Kingdom, even though her life would be in jeopardy should she have to return to her native Iran.

Based on her own life, Kiana Firouz's documentary film Cul de Sac, produced in Britain and directed by Ramin Goudarzi Nejad, explores lesbian life in Iran. When officials in the Muslim nation became aware of the film, they started making life difficult for her until she fled to the U.K. She's since asked for asylum only to be denied by the British government. Firouz could face severe punishment, including lashings, should she be forced to return to Iran, where homosexuality is illegal.

Lady Gaga has made an appeal regarding Firouz's plight. Read the full story here.
