Gay rights group Equality Michigan Action Network endorsed Lansing mayor Virg Bernero for the state's upcoming gubernatorial race on Monday.
Bernero's brother was gay and faced alienation before he died of AIDS, according to WLAJ News. Since his brother's death in 1990, Bernero says he has committed himself to supporting LGBT equality laws, like a human rights ordinance Lansing introduced in 2006.
Bernero faces Michigan's house speaker, Andy Dillon, in the primary election for the Democratic candidacy, which is set for August 3.
