Gay Hawaii state representative Blake Oshiro won his primary battle against
Honolulu city councilman Gary Okino Saturday, putting him one step
closer to being reelected after coming out to his colleagues earlier
this year.
Oshiro, the Hawaii house's majority floor leader, beat Okino with 51% of the vote, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Okino received 39% of the vote, and Sam Kong received 9%.
Oshiro introduced the civil union bill that the legislature approved, only to be vetoed by Gov. Linda Lingle. Okino was a vocal opponent of instituting civil unions, a stance that likely lost him support from some Democrats.
