The Tulsa, Okla., school board will add sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination policy for students, staff, and parents.
The unanimous vote on Monday approving the policy addition was made in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education's office of civil rights, Tami Marler (pictured), a spokeswoman for the school district, told the Tulsa World.
Toby Jenkins of Oklahomans for Equality told The Advocate in an e-mail that the vote "took decades of behind-the-scenes work."
"We are pretty proud of this in the heartland," he said.
