Antigay activist Scott Lively, who stoked the fires of homophobia in Uganda to result in a bill that would impose the death penalty on gay people, has opened Holy Grounds, a coffee shop in Springfield, Mass., that prompts concern among local leaders.
According to WGGB, Springfield city councilor Tim Rooke worries about high school students going into the coffee shop, which is near their school and offers free coffee. Some students reportedly are skipping class to hang out at Holy Grounds.
"My concern is are they interacting with a gentlemen who has very different view points than most of the people in Springfield," said Rooke.
Lively, who has called the gay movement an "evil institution," defended the coffee shop as a religious center and not a business in an interview with WGGB.
"We have scripture on the wall and our purpose is to attempt to show how biblical values can change things in the city. That's what it's all about," he said.
