The Amazing Race returns February 20 with its first all-star season, and two teams with gay contestants will be fighting it out for the grand prize.
Activist Mel White and screenwriter son Mike will again compete on the Race. The team finished in sixth place on the show's 14th season after they found themselves lost in Thailand.
Mel White became a prominent LGBT activist when he came out in 1994 after years of writing for right-wing ministers and media. Mike, the screenwriter behind hits including The Good Girl and School of Rock, is bisexual.
From the same season, Luke Adams -- who became known on the show more for being deaf than for being gay -- will return with his mother, Margie. The two made a formidable team, finishing third on their season.
Luke told The Advocate before he was eliminated that hybrid of American Sign Language and home sign he and his mother used to communicate gave them a significant advantage.
"It was a huge advantage for us. Also, since we were unable to talk -- or bicker! -- while we were in the middle of challenges, we flew through them, where a lot of the other teams lost a lot of time bickering."
