Fight Footage Enters King Trial, Mistrial Denied
Hoping to demonstrate a violent streak, prosecutors in the murder trial of Brandon McInerney -- accused of killing gay 15-year-old Lawrence King -- showed video footage in court of McInerney fighting while in juvenile hall.
Defense attorney Scott Wippert (pictured, left) countered that fights are common in juvenile hall. A corrections officer at the juvenile hall where McInerney spent time testified that the teen was not violent but rather well-behaved. The officer also disputed the prosecution's accusation that McInerney, who shot King twice in the head in February 2008 at their school in Oxnard, Calif., is a white supremacist who hates gay people.

On Monday, Wippert tried to convince Ventura County Superior Court judge Charles Campbell to declare a mistrial. Wippert claimed the prosecution didn't alert the defense to images and slides shown when Simi Valley police detective Dan Swanson testified about white supremacists. Campbell denied Wippert's mistrial request as well as another request for more preparation time for the defense's cross-examination of Swanson, the Ventura County Star reports.
