Weekend, about the bond formed by two gay men during an intimate 48 hours together, has been named the best-reviewed romantic film of 2011, with a 95% approval rating from review aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by Andrew Haight and starring Tom Cullen and Chris New, Weekend was released last September to exceptional reviews but grossed less than $500,000. Rotten Tomatoes, which gives Weekend its Golden Tomato Award, says of the film, "it may be a chamber piece, but Weekend's revelations on modern sexuality expand far beyond the modest setting."
Mike Mills's semiautobiographical Beginners, which starred Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Plummer as a man who comes as gay following the death of his wife, is in third place with 84%.
