Joran Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the murder of Peruvian woman Stephany Flores on Friday. He was also ordered to pay $75,000 in reparations to Flores's family.
Van der Sloot pleaded guilty to killing Flores after meeting her at a casino in Lima, Peru in May 2010. He said he killed her because she figured out his connection to Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway while they were playing online poker in his hotel room. According to the Associated Press, Van der Sloot's lawyer said he killed her in a fit of rage caused by psychological trauma he experienced by being pursued for Holloway's death. Flores, 21, was a business student and out lesbian.
Van der Sloot is also the primary suspect for Holloway's death. The 18-year-old disappeared in 2005 on a trip to Aruba. Earlier this week, a U.S judge declared that she is presumed to be dead. Holloway's parents are hoping that Van der Sloot will be extradited to the United States for a trial. He also faces charges of extortion, because he allegedly made an offer to Holloway's mother's attorney to see her daughter's remains.
