AP: Obama's Nanny Was a Trans Woman Whose Life Is in Danger
President Obama's nanny was a transgender woman, the Associated Press reports, and has faced severe harassment in her home country of Indonesia.
Evie was nanny to 8-year-old "Barry" for two years after meeting his mother, Ann Dunham, at a party. Dunham was married at the time to Lolo Soetoro, the president's Indonesian stepfather, whom she eventually divorced.
Evie told the AP stories of living under the constant threat of physical harm, including being attacked by soldiers who shaved her head and burned her skin with cigarettes. Evie stopped living her daily life as a woman after she found a transgender friend murdered. She tries to fit in now dressed as a man.
"Now when people call me scum," she told the AP, "I can just say: 'But I was the nanny for the President of the United States!'"
The White House did not comment in the AP's story. Read more here.
