The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, and Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón has now officially become the first trans actor in history to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars.

Besides Gascón's historic nomination, the Netflix film has been nominated for a record-breaking 13 awards at the 2025 Oscars — more than any other foreign film in history.

Namely, Emilia Pérez was nominated for Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Picture, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), Best International Feature (France), Best Original Song ("El Mal" and "Mi Camino"), Best Adapted Screenplay (Jacques Audiard), Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Editing, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography.

At 52 years of age, Gascón, who was born in Alcobendas, Spain, was also recently honored as a 2024 Out100 honoree.

The mind-blowing 13 nominations earned by Emilia Pérez make it the most-nominated film at the 2025 Oscars. Trailing behind are Wicked and The Brutalist (10 nominations each), as well as A Complete Unknown and Conclave (eight nominations each).

Leading up to this historic Oscars nomination, Gascón already won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.

The 97th Academy Awards are scheduled to air Sunday, March 2 on ABC.
