Rachel Maddow used her Monday night broadcast to deliver a devastating reality check for President Donald Trump: Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of his chaotic return to the White House.

Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, Maddow has hosted The Rachel Maddow Show nightly, stepping back into MSNBC’s daily primetime lineup to track the administration’s authoritarian shift. After Wednesday night’s show, she will return to her regular Monday-only schedule — but not before laying out the public’s sweeping rejection of Trump’s first 100 days.

“Today’s yet another day of polling that confirms what is now validated by every major poll that has been done heading toward the 100-day benchmark,” Maddow said. She walked viewers through a brutal series of numbers. “Do you approve or disapprove of Donald Trump? Disapprove by a 16-point margin. Do you approve or disapprove of Elon Musk? Woo. Look at that. Disapprove by a 22-point margin. Yikes.”

Poll after poll showed the same story: disapproval of Trump’s handling of immigration, the economy, foreign relations, and environmental deregulation by wide margins. Americans disapproved of Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship by 36 points and opposed his cuts to medical research by 56 points.

“It all says the same thing,” Maddow said. “Trump underwater on essentially everything and on almost all issues, he is deeply underwater.”

She noted that Americans are not just dissatisfied but furious. In a new NBC News poll, “furious” was the most common emotion respondents chose to describe how they felt about Trump’s actions.

According to that poll, a majority of Americans — 55 percent — disapprove of Trump’s job performance, with 41 percent saying they strongly disapprove. Just 25 percent say they strongly approve. When asked to describe their emotions, more Americans chose “angry” and “furious” than “happy” or “thrilled.” On tariffs, Trump’s worst-performing issue, 61 percent disapprove — including most independents.

Maddow said Trump appears rattled by his deep unpopularity, citing his online attacks accusing pollsters of “cheating big” and labeling them “negative criminals.” Maddow mocked the phrasing. “What’s a negative criminal? What does that even mean?” she asked.

Throughout her nightly coverage, Maddow has highlighted the real-world consequences of Trump’s policies. In March, she reported on the deportation of Andry Hernandez Romero, a 23-year-old gay Venezuelan asylum-seeker secretly removed to El Salvador’s notorious Cecot mega-prison without a court hearing or deportation order — a case Maddow called “one of the most dramatic crises of this new presidency.”

In an interview, Romero’s attorney, Lindsay Toczylowski, toldThe Advocate that she worries about his wellbeing and that the case is the worst she’s seen in her legal career.

Beyond the polling numbers, Maddow said Trump’s political collapse has become cultural. “Culturally, it is now firmly established that capitulation and sucking up to Trump is shameful and weak and marks you as a loser,” she said. “Conversely, saying no to Trump and fighting him shows that you are strong and a winner.”

“I think 100 days in that Donald Trump is losing,” Maddow said, “and I think Americans defending democracy are winning.”
