Kat McPhee Tells Idols to Stay in Closet

KATHERINE MC PHEE X390 | Advocate.com (Publicity)

Singer-actress Katharine McPhee, best known as first runner-up on season 5 of American Idol, is now advising future gay contestants not to reveal their sexuality while still on the show — regardless of new judge Ellen DeGeneres’s potentially liberating influence.

“I love Ellen and think she’s going to be great on the show,” McPhee tells NightTimez, a New England LGBT newspaper, “but that's a tricky thing I can only compare to someone who's really spiritual or religious: You don’t need to wear your religion on your sleeve. The competition is not about your faith or your sexuality but about you as an artist.

“Look, I think everyone knew Adam Lambert was gay. I don’t feel it was a big surprise, and I think Adam did the right thing by coming out with that Rolling Stone cover. He was just as flamboyant on the show as he is now, but anytime you say too much about your personal stuff, it can hinder you in the competition. If people saw the pictures of me being crazy in college with my gay friends and my girlfriends, they’d probably think differently of me on the show. So it’s a fine line you have to follow on a reality show competition when all of America is voting.”

Currently promoting her sophomore solo album, Unbroken, McPhee doesn’t hesitate to come out as an admirer of the feminine form.

“It might be kind of cliché, and it’s taken me some time to fully admit it, but Megan Fox is definitely my female crush just for physical appearances. Sometimes she’s a little too vulgar for me with the things she says, but she’s a gorgeous woman.”

If sexuality doesn't matter, why didn't Adam Lambert win? Sexuality aside Adam Lambert should have won. He was ten times better than Kris Allen- everyone knew it- even Kris Allen.

Of course homophobia is alive. It will be for a while, unfortunately, just as bigotry based on race or creed will linger for a generation or two (but hopefully not much longer than that). Any progress made will be slow at best. Don't kid yourselves that because the hetero people you know seem to get it that middle America has changed that much. However, as far as Kat McPhee is concerned, keep in mind that her perspective is probably not as forward-thinking as your average pop singer. She didn't claw her way up by the normal path, but instead got fame quickly by participating in a reality program. It's going to take more time. I don't believe her comments were anything more than a recommendation on how best to win that show, not a plan for how best to live one's life. Obviously it would be much better to be who you are at all times, but that's not how the music industry works.

'Yes, it does matter what your sexuality is because many heterosexuals will not buy music or anything else from someone who is not heterosexual" ---How do you explain then the success of Elton John and many other gay celebrities? Or the success of shows in the 80s like Kids in the Hall? Or the hugely popular Tabatha's Salon Makeover? Even evangelicals admit watching Will & Grace, even homophobes let gays do their hair and makeup. You'd have to be a really hardcore bigot not to buy anything from gays, and most people in this country are not hardcore bigots, they're simply tired of political correctness but when it comes to individuals they will judge them on a case by case basis for the most part.

Only a heterosexual would say something like this. Yes, it does matter what your sexuality is because many heterosexuals will not buy music or anything else from someone who is not heterosexual. Heterosexuals have no problems with heterosexuality being out in the open, they have no problem with people being different as long as they are heterosexual. Adam is the third gay contestant who has lost American Idol; Clay Aiken and David Archuleta (he hasn't come out yet) are the other two, because of gay speculation. When it comes down to decision time heterosexuals go for the heterosexuals no matter how inadequate they are; bigotry takes over. Adam would have sold at least twice as much as he already has if heterosexuals didn't know he is gay. Heterosexuals in the entertainment industry have made every step they could to make sure gay people don't get any great jobs, only heterosexuals and heteropretenders get them. Once again the hetero-only mindset of heteros rears it's ugly head.

I can see some of you are self-hating homos, you don't complain when the breeders engage in all forms of breedery on stage and off. I guess some of you are the same way at work, while your breeder coworkers talk about the opposite sex you keep quiet like a good little eunuch. Being gay is no big deal yet some of you treat it like it was something really shameful. Chelsea, your story was interesting, I wish you had reported him to GLAAD. Still, you shouldn't let people like that intimidate you, he's just one a-hole, nothing more.

Don't kill the messenger. Last year I did an internship at a well known New York record label. One night in the Village I was blown away by this amazing artist and immediately arranged for him to be scouted. He had amazing stage presence reminescent of a young Bruce Springsteen in his prime. I was so excited thinking I could somehow be a part of finding the NEXT BIG THING. Well so much for pipe dreams. The person who I reported to basically reprimanded me for trying to get the label to sign a f****t. He kept screaming at me saying in these tough economic times I need to be more careful with my recommendations because if somehow he had slipped through (his actual words} the return of their investment would be limited because mainstream audiences would not support any artists once they found out. He cited Clay Aiken who was a top selling artist but after he came out he was dropped by his label soon after. Needless to say I was not asked to come back this year. Homophobia is alive.

If it's all about talent and performing and not sexuality, then how about Idol requires all contestants to refrain from talking about wives, husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. and stops all the video backstories about spouses whether dead or alive. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion on how best to handle coming out, but let's not pretend that straight folks don't flaunt their sexuality at *every* opportunity or that the show is asexual. Let's at least acknowledge that the recommendation is that gay folks 'try to pass' for a chance at fame. Personally I think any Idol fan who was going to vote against a gay singer probably voted against Adam even without his making it official...and a few people who may have supported him more were turned off by his pussyfooting around issue.

Amazing to me how some folks are 'jumping the gun' on the meaning of this article. Some got it, others didn't IMO. Of course Kat is supportive of gay folks. She says she had them in college. She is advising 'gay contestants' to go under the radar while in competition if you want to win. That is good advice. You don't shit in the sandbox where you play or work. Same with competition where many judges........aka voting public are homophobic. Some of you guys went off debasing her character over this article are indeed 'queens.' Do you want a gay contestant to win or do you want them to go onstage, prance around like a fairy....or begin a dialouge on political equality. That is not the forum. It is a contest on performance. Leave it at that. Once they win........then go to the rooftops if you want.
