Hawaii's Djou Mixed on Gay Issues

Republican Honolulu city council member Charles Djou, who won Saturday’s special congressional election in Hawaii, has mixed positions on gay rights issues — opposing civil unions and marriage equality but supporting repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." Djou will fill the seat vacated by Democrat Neil Abercrombie, who is leaving Congress to run for governor.

Djou was the only candidate to come out against the state’s civil unions bill, which is currently awaiting a decision from Gov. Linda Lingle. He issued a statement saying that one of his Democratic rivals, state senate president Colleen Hanabusa, had “blatantly ignored the will” of Hawaii residents by supporting civil unions. “Hawaii voters have spoken very clearly in support of traditional marriage,” he added, referring to a 1998 constitutional amendment that allowed legislators to ban marriage equality, which they did. He also supports the antigay Defense of Marriage Act, the Associated Press reports.

The congressman-elect says his opposition to "don't ask, don't tell" is rooted in his experience as an Army Reserve captain, which led him to believe that the military's antigay policy is ineffective and, considering antifraternization rules, unnecessary. That opposition helped Djou win the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans in April. At the time, the group's chairman, Terry W. Hamilton said, "We are confident that [Djou] will be a consistent champion of liberty equality and freedom for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation."

The gay political group GOProud also endorsed Djou, with executive director Jimmy LaSalvia saying "Djou is a limited-government, free-market conservative who support policies that will improve the lives of all the people of Hawaii, including gays and lesbians."

Djou is the first Republican to represent Hawaii in Congress in two decades. But if Democrats have their way, his time there will be short-lived. He is up for reelection in November, and his two Democratic rivals in Saturday’s race, Hanabusa and Ed Chase, say they’re already turning their attention to the September primary.

First of all, the "will of the people" do not have the right to vote on other citizen's civil rights! Secondly, civil unions are not the same thing as marriage. They are not thought of a traditional marriage, and other states and the government doesn't recognized them like they do with marriage. I would love for Mr. Djou to explain how they are the same thing, because they are clearly not. Aren't civil unions what religious people WANTED gay couples to have INSTEAD of marriage? If I didn't know any better, I'd call them hypocrites and liars. But that would be unchristian of me, wouldn't it?

Unless your a homosexual you have no right to make decisions for us. So stop. I think Charles Djou is a hyprocrite. We are good enough to die for this country but not good enough to allow us to show our love to one another by marrying. You are a fool and a fence straddler Mr. Djou and will say anything to get votes.

I think Asians should be able to serve in the US military, but not have the equal civil constitutional right of civil marriage, because it makes me uncomfortable, and the Bible does not portray Macedonians favorably and many of them were of Asian origin.

So, allow young gay and lesbian military members to wake each day willing to sacrifice their lives to protect all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities that this man enjoys; just don't extend the same to those will to die for him and all others like him. Makes sense?

What a phoney motherf{}#er! He clearly is just taking the most popular stances on these issues to try to get 51% of the votes. I am really tired of hearing politicians use peoples rights as political leverage. It's discraceful and an embarrasment to the united states. This picture kind of posses me off, who does this asshole think he is to say that I don't deserve the right to marry? Enough is enough!

Chris: Obama doesn't support gay marriage because he knows a statement of support would lose him the homophobe vote. So his position makes him cowardly, not anti-gay. Djou, on the other hand, has spoken in support of banning gay marriage entirely. So yes, whether he's saying that out of genuine conviction or a desire to court votes, it indeed makes him anti-gay. At issue here is the fact that gay rights still qualify as a political football. I'll bet that Djou doesn't think of himself as homophobic, but he fails to consider the people he's hurting for the sake of political expediency.

Obama isn't opposed to civil unions and has come out against DOMA. This guy, on the other hand, is more than happy to give us the right to fight equally but not live equally. Sounds kinda antigay to me.
