10. FILM: The Deep Blue Sea
The venerable Terence Rattigan play, likely inspired by an episode in his own life when his male lover left him for another man, was previously made into a stagy, melodramatic 1955 film starring Vivien Leigh. Out director Terence Davies has created his own stunningly sensual and thoroughly cinematic adaptation and coaxed a superb performance from Rachel Weisz as married Hester Collyer, whose passion for a younger lover leads to misfortune. Now playing in select theaters.
9. DVD: Del Shores: My Sordid Life
If you're familiar with Sordid Lives, you already know that creator Del Shores is quite a storyteller, but you might not know that he's an impressive raconteur without the mask of his colorful Southern characters. This recording of his hilarious 30-city U.S. tour features politically incorrect observations, dishy Hollywood anecdotes, and dressing room high jinks with pals including Leslie Jordan. To order visit BreakingGlassPictures.com.
8. EVENT: Beneath the Sheets
Cazwell, Misnomer(S), and Martin Theberge will perform as Logo's Jonathan D. Lovitz and Oxygen's Jenna Russo cohost this fund-raiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Sal Bardo's short film Chaser, which aims to raise awareness about the complacency surrounding the topic of unsafe sex and HIV/AIDS. Tonight at New York City's Players Club. For tickets go here.
7. DVD: The B-52s: With the Wild Crowd
America's quintessential party band -- and let's acknowledge that three of its four members fit under the LGBT umbrella -- commemorates the anniversary of its first live show, on Valentine's Day, 1977, with this concert filmed for PBS (and now on DVD) in the group's hometown, Athens, Ga. Fred Schneider's playful vocals, Keith Strickland's matchless guitar, and, most of all, the soaring harmonies of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson on hits such as "Mesopotamia," "Private Idaho," and "Roam" still thrill after all these years.
6. FILM: The Beat Hotel
Exhausted and outraged following the landmark obscenity trials surrounding his poem Howl, Allen Ginsberg fled to Paris in 1957 with lover Peter Orlovsky and close friend Gregory Corso to take refuge at a cheap hotel in the city's Latin Quarter. Alan Govenar's documentary vividly combines vintage footage, photograph, interviews, and stylized dramatic re-creations to recall a fascinating period in Beat history. Opens in select theaters today.
5.TV: Happy Endings
Of course, TV's most reliably witty sitcom will end its second season with a big gay bang and a same-sex wedding when Stephen Guarino's Derrick ties the knot. At the reception Adam Pally's Max unites Mandonna, his Material Girl tribute band, to perform a unique cover of "Like a Prayer." The season 2 finale airs on ABC Wednesday.
4. BLOG: DLNQNT
This irreverent pop culture blog skewers memes and celebrates hedonism. Features include "Aural Addiction," which highlights esoteric party jams, and "Binge & Purge," which promotes culinary indulgence. Though not an LGBT blog per se, DLNQNT also offers "Queen Please!" a section devoted to drag culture -- Sherry Vine, Lady Bunny, and Pandora Boxx are recent interviewees -- and "Broadway Scandal," which "puts the t&a in theater." 3. DVD: Truth or Dare
Filmmaker Alek Keshishian was given unprecedented access to Madonna, perhaps at the height of her fame and power, to record the entertainer on and off stage during her phenomenal Blond Ambition world tour in 1990. The following year this hit film -- still the eighth-highest-grossing documentary of all time -- introduced fans to the sometimes outrageous antics of her motley crew of dancers, most of whom were gay. Twenty-one years later, genitals are again exposed, threatened arrests are avoided, and water bottles are fellated, as Truth or Dare makes its debut on Blu-ray Tuesday.
2. TV: Savage U
Dan Savage takes a rollicking road trip with producer-sidekick Lauren
Hutchinson to help solve the sex dilemmas of college students around the
country in this relentlessly entertaining and occasionally very moving new series. From the serious (an overweight guy recalls humiliating rejection he's experienced and gets solid advice from Savage) to the silly ("Does semen really clear up your skin?"), there's no Q that he won't A. Premieres Tuesday on MTV.
1. FILM: Bully
After months of controversy over the MPAA rating for Lee Hirsch's searing chronicle of the bullying epidemic, the powerful, heartbreaking documentary is finally being released unrated. Bully opens today in Los Angeles and New York, with more cities to be announced soon. For more information go to The BullyProject.com.
