Crowdfunding Campaigns You Should Consider This Week

Crowdfund_400_0

From new collections of music to moving documentaries, these crowdfunded LGBT projects are worthy of a gander.

Truth. Be. Told. is a new episodic TV series documenting the lives of "Queer Black Visionaries" from filmmaker Katina Parker and Executive Producers Carol Ann Shine and Jennifer MacArthur.

The creative minds behind the series began a crowdfunding campaign via IndieGoGo with plans to use the funds to cut the pilot episode, which will be used to set up a world premiere at OUTFest in July 2013. Though the project's $10,000 goal wasn't met, IndieGoGo's flexible funding structure ensures the $3,970 raised by the campaign will help fund the endeavor. However, support for the series is still welcome and the following list of three additional crowdfunded LGBT projects are also worth a look.

Project: Hi-Fashion's You Are Gorgeous EP (Kickstarter)

Queer electro-pop duo Hi Fashion is back with plans to release their second EP You Are Gorgeous. They are offering a wide variety of incentives for those who donate, including a haircut from band member Rick Gradone(who has styled for i-D, Dazed and Confused, Harpers Bazaar etc), a Hi Fashion slumber party, and even the chance to be in the next Hi Fashion video. The group needs your help to reach their $25,000 goal by May, 7. Watch their wonderful pitch below and head over to Kickstarter to support the project.

Project: Vuto: a novel about Africa, women & the Peace Corps (Kickstarter)

Vuto is out author A.J. Walkley's third book and the premise was inspired by her experience as a health volunteer in the Peace Corps, stationed in Malawi, Africa. As a member of the Peace Corps, she was exposed to many cultural traditions including the "two week rule" of birth - when a child is born in the village, it must survive for two weeks before its father will acknowledge its existence. If the child dies before the two week point is reached, the mother and women of the village bury the child and the father will never know he had a child at all. This tradition forms the basis for her novel, Vuto. Though Walkley has already reached her $3,000 goal, additional funds pledged will be used to fund the book trailer, marketing costs, and book tour.

Project: Out in the Night - New documentary film by Blair Doroshwalther (Kickstarter)

Out in the Night follows the journey of a group of African American teenagers who went to a gay-friendly neighborhood in New York City for a night out in 2006 and were confronted by an older man on the street. They defended themselves. Strangers jumped in to support them and a fight ensued. However, only the women were rounded up by police and charged and convicted as perpetrators of gang assault. They became known as The New Jersey 4. The film examines the events after the fight: biased media coverage likening the women to "man-hating" animals, and unprecedentedly harsh sentencing by the court. This story shows how four young, queer women of color were unfairly criminalized for defending themselves.
