AIDS Project Los Angeles embraces gridlock and concrete streets to raise cash.

Are you ready for five miles of ass kicking--in the name of a good cause, of course?

Concrete Hero turns the streets of downtown Los Angeles into an even crazier obstacle course, where participants have to climb, duck, dodge and leap their way through five miles. The event is for people of all ages and athletic abilities to show their support for AIDS Project Los Angeles, one of the city's premier HIV/AIDS advocacy organizations.

Last year's event raised $400,000 through 1,00 participants, with team Kick A$$ raising $49,000 alone.

"Given the overwhelming popularity of last year's event, we've kept and enhanced some of the iconic and thrilling L.A.-themed obstacles like The Hollywood Sign Climb, Carmageddon, and Tar-Pit Traverse. In addition, we've added several more obstacles and surprises over a longer, five-mile route through downtown Los Angeles, which starts and finishes at Los Angeles State Historic Park."

Proceeds from participants (who have to raise at least $400) will benefit the 60,000 people with HIV who receive help from APLA. Craig E. Thompson, executive director at APLA, said this annual fundraiser will be key to increasing services --including food pantries and dental services--for Los Angeles' population for people with HIV.

"Though many of those locally who live with HIV/AIDS have access to life-sustaining medical treatments, they simply cannot afford essentials like food, safe housing, dental care, and much more," he said in a statement. "With those basic needs unmet, too many struggle to manage the burdens of daily living, let alone the complications of managing a chronic and still-deadly disease like HIV. In addition, many youth today view HIV as a problem of the past. But in fact, infection rates among youth are on the rise, so funds raised through Concrete Hero will support prevention and education programs across Los Angeles County that target those at greatest risk, including youth along with men and women of color."
