Iowa officials worry about HIV-positive people diagnosed late
State health officials are increasingly concerned about Iowans who have had HIV for years before being diagnosed. People who do not know their HIV status are more likely to spread the disease, said experts, and late testers run a greater risk of developing AIDS. State records show that 52% of Iowans diagnosed with HIV in 2003 developed AIDS within a year of their diagnoses. About 1,270 state residents have been diagnosed with HIV or AIDS; health officials estimate the number of undiagnosed HIV cases at 317. (AP)
