The Advocate Wins Maggie Award for Best Web Publication

Maggie Awards

The Western Publishing Association honored The Advocate with two awards for excellence in journalism.

The Advocate took home two awards at the 65th annual Maggie Awards, a yearly competition that honors the accomplishments of West Coast-based publishing.

The LGBT magazine tied for Best Web Publication with VegNews in the Consumer category. Other finalists, which are selected by the southern California-based Western Publishing Association, included Truthdig, Powder, Reason, C-Suite Quarterly, and Comstock's.

Daniel Reynolds, The Advocate's editor of social media, accepted the awards on behalf of the publication.

"This award sends a message: that we will not support bigotry or intolerance or discrimination in this country," he said at the Los Angeles event. "We will fight against those who oppress us. And we will strive to make sure that whomever is the next President of the United States will take us forward, not backward in the fight for equality."

The Advocate also won Best Regularly Featured Web Column for the series #6in10Men, which spotlights the HIV crisis among black gay and bisexual men.

"We in the media must prove that black lives matter by reporting not only on the bullets that take so many black lives, but also the systemic injustices that allow disease to take these lives as well," Reynolds said in his speech. "I dedicate this award to these lives, and to change, and to my partner Ran Frazier."

The Advocate had also been nominated for Best Use of Social Media for its #DayInLGBT series. Managing Editor Sunnivie Brydum and Mitch Kellaway were also finalists for Best Web Article for their reportage of Ky Peterson, a black transgender prisoner.
