Three members of
the gay activist group Soulforce who tried to enlist at
a U.S. Army recruitment center in Chicago on Tuesday were
turned away after announcing that they are gay.
The activists, all students from Chicago's
Northwestern University, said they planned to return to
the recruitment center in September to stage a sit-in.
"I believe
serving in the military is the highest form of civil
service that you can do," Soulforce member Kelsey Pacha told
the UPI wire service.
The activists'
attempts to enlist are part of Soulforce's Right to Serve
campaign to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell"
policy and have taken place in 30 cities across the
nation. (The Advocate)
