The third annual "Old Skool" Barbecue, one of the biggest events in Los Angeles's black LGBT community, takes place August 24. This year's honorees include Women Alive's Carrie Broadus; Wendell Carmichael, president of At the Beach Los Angeles Black Gay Pride; La Verne "Mother Rose," longtime transgender community activist; Cleo Manago, founder of AmASSI, a nonprofit, community-based health, wellness, and cultural affirmation center; Vinessa Romain, board chair of Long Beach Gay Pride; the Reverend Russell Thornhill, pastor at Unity Fellowship Church and a noted lecturer and counselor; and late community activist Alton Miranda.
Proceeds from the event will go toward an upcoming town hall meeting on the state of black gay Los Angeles.
