Some 700 supporters of Florida's Amendment 2, which would ban same-sex marriage, turned out at a rally in Orlando on Monday night. That was far fewer than the thousands of people organizers had said would show up at the First Baptist Church, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

John Sternberger, head of the Florida Family Policy Council and a leader in the effort to pass Amendment 2, told the Sentinel that African-American supporters of the measure may have attended Sen. Barack Obama's rally at Orlando's Amway Arena instead. The Democratic presidential nominee's appearance with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday drew 40,000-50,000, according to news reports.

Polls have shown Amendment 2 leading, but not with the 60% level of support needed to pass a constitutional amendment in Florida. According to the Sentinel, Sternberger acknowledged the outcome on Election Day would be close. (The Advocate)
