An ensemble worn by Sean Penn in his Oscar-winning role as the late San Francisco politician Harvey Milk was bought for $12,500 in an auction on February 28.
Tom Gregory bought the three-piece suit, auctioned off by the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation. Proceeds will be split between the Variety Children's Charity of Southern California and the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School, in New York City.
"The story of Harvey Milk only highlights the shame of those who vote to deny marriage equality to lesbians and gay men," Gregory said in a press release. Gregory has won other charitable auctions, like two shirts worn in the Focus Features film Brokeback Mountain .
The shirt, suit, and tie were designed by Academy Award-nominated costume designer Danny Glicker for Milk.
Penn won an Academy Award for his lead role in Milk on February 22. He is currently lobbying California legislators to enact a day of remembrance to commemorate Harvey Milk's birthday.
In 2008, the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation hosted an online auction to benefit Variety by offering a dress worn by Kiera Knightley in the film Atonement , also released by Focus Features.
Variety is a global network in 14 countries that provides services for children in need. The Southern California chapter has raised $60 million to help thousands of children in its 67 years of existence, according to the press release. The Hetrick-Martin Institute is the largest and oldest LGBTQ youth service provider in New York, extending assistance to youths --especially those most at risk -- between the ages of 12 and 21.
