A protest involving nearly 300 people touched down Tuesday on Glasgow's Glasgay! arts festival over a controversial play that presents Jesus as a transgender woman.
Many in Scotland's Christian community view the Tron Theatre's presentation of Jesus, Queen of Heaven as an insult, and hundreds of them gathered at the theater on Tuesday for a candlelight protest. Jesus, Queen of Heaven was written and performed by transgender playwright Jo Clifford, and was staged as part of the Glasgay! arts festival.
"Jesus, Queen of Heaven is a literary work of fiction exploring the artist's own personal journey of faith as a transgendered person," Glasgay! producer Steven Thomson told the BBC. But Jack Bell, a pastor of the Zion Baptist Church in Glasgow, told the BBC, "You can't blaspheme God and use freedom of speech as an excuse for that. True biblical Christianity is becoming marginalized through political correctness."
