Salt Lake City mayor Ralph Becker signed a pair of nondiscrimination ordinances Tuesday afternoon.
"This is a great moment ... in the history of Salt Lake City," Becker told reporters, according to the Deseret News. "Part of our success as a community is all of us living together and respecting each other."
The ordinances make it illegal for landlords and employers to discriminate based on sexual orientation. They are the first pieces of legislation in the state to prohibit discrimination based on sexuality.
Now that the ordinances have been signed, they will go into effect after the state's 2010 legislative session ends in March.
