Washington, D.C., officials project that the new ordinance legalizing same-sex marriage will go into effect on March 2, although couples who apply for a license will have to wait three full business days to marry because of a mandatory waiting period.
Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the bill passed by the D.C. council last month, but it must undergo a 30-day period of congressional review. According to the Associated Press, the council determined the bill's projected effective date of March 2 based on the congressional calendar, which could be subject to change.
