A Las Vegas couple traveled to Des Moines to have a
recommitment ceremony Wednesday, the beginning of a tour of the five
states and district where same-sex marriage is legal -- an event they
call the Marriage Tour.
Dan and Josh Smithman told KCCI, a Des Moines-area television station, that they want to emphasize the inequities of the Defense of Marriage Act.
"We've gotten five states and [Washington] D.C. in a matter of just a couple of years," Dan Smithman said. "Two in 2010, between New Hampshire and D.C., so things have been really moving in a positive direction. I hope we're just riding the wave of awareness."
The state recognizes their marriage because they were married in California in June 2008, before the passage of Proposition 8.
From Iowa, the Smithmans will travel to the District of Columbia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut.
