Washington Post editorial writer Jonathan Capehart reacted to the news that Laura Bush supports marriage equality by consulting a friend, who asked about the former first lady, "Where were you when we needed you?"
Bush announced her support for
marriage equality Tuesday on CNN's
Larry King Live, where she appeared to promote her new book,
Spoken From the Heart."How about that?" wondered Capehart in the
Post. "Another high-powered Republican coming out for marriage equality. Cindy and Meghan McCain and former vice president Dick Cheney have long been members of this club. But when I asked my friend Charles Francis what he thought about this revelation, he put my enthusiasm in check.
'''As a longtime family friend, who respects Laura greatly,' Francis told me, 'I can only say, 'Where were you when we needed you?'"
According to Capehart, the support from Bush is welcome, but in order to be a real hero, she should have spoken during the years her husband, President George W. Bush, was in power.
