The California state senate Thursday approved a resolution supporting the end of "don't ask, don't tell" with a 24-7 vote.

"A soldier must display courage, patriotism, commitment, and ability -- none of which have anything to do with sexual orientation," said Sen. Christine Kehoe, who introduced the resolution in 2009. "Overturning this shameful policy will help ensure that gay and lesbian Americans will be afforded the same opportunities as any other American who wants to serve our country."

The resolution was approved by the state assembly last week, according to Equality California.
