Miss New York 2010 Claire Buffie caught up with Plum TV at the Empire State Pride Agenda's Annual Hamptons Tea Dance, where she talked about her status as the first contestant in the Miss America pageant's history to champion gay rights as her official platform.

"I feel like gay rights are the civil rights movement of my generation," she said. Buffie does her work through her platform, "Straight for Equality: Let's Talk," which aims to bring awareness to gay rights.

She told The Advocate earlier this month she was inspired by her sister, who is a lesbian, to make gay rights her platform.

The competition for Miss America will be in January.
