Brian Bond on AIDS Awareness Day

Brian Bond -- the deputy director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and President Obama's liaison to the LGBT community -- wants gay Americans to know about Washington's efforts to curtail HIV infection among gay men.

Writing in the blog for the Office of National AIDS Policy on Monday, National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Bond first acknowledged himself as HIV-positive. He then discussed how the recently released National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States documents the high rates of infection among gay men and how they plan to curtail the disease.

"Gay and bisexual men make up roughly 2% of the U.S. population, but we account for 53% of new HIV infections. We are the only group where HIV infection rates are rising.

These statistics are shocking and they demand a stronger, more focused national response that includes federal leadership, combined with new levels of commitment and focus at the state and local levels. These data also demand a reinvigorated commitment to ending HIV/AIDS from the LGBT community. We all have a responsibility to reverse that trend."
