John Berry, the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, says that he was never bullied, but being gay generated plenty of challenges before he could become the highest ranking openly gay person in the country's history.
In addition to his career, Berry talks about coming out to his parents. His father, a Marine sergeant and devout churchgoer, refused to allow him to bring his partner to visit. But he adds, "Ten years later, when my partner was dying from AIDS, my dad held him in his arms and told him, 'I love you like my own son.' Things do get better."
