At least one gay sailor has come forward to defend Capt. Owen Honors, who was second in command on the USS Enterprise when he produced several videos screened aboard the ship that some have found offensive and homophobic.
The sailor, identified by The Atlanticas Eric Prenger, sent a letter to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an organization for gay and lesbian military personnel, after it voiced its outrage at the videos shown four years ago. Prenger wants the organization to retract its statements regarding Honors's videos, which caused him to be permanently removed from duty.
"As a gay man that served onboard the USS Enterprise during both the '06 and '07 deployments I was never once offended by Capt. Honors' choice of humor," he wrote. "I have begun to make contact with my fellow gay service members who were also on those deployments. We will band together to show our support for Capt. Honors."
