Indiana business leaders are expressing some concern that a gay
marriage ban could hinder their efforts to recruit gay and lesbian
employees to the area.
Representatives from Eli Lilly and Cummins told the Indiana senate judiciary committee that the proposed constitutional ban, which also outlaws anything similar to marriage, could also be applied to domestic partnership-like benefits for gay and lesbian employees and their significant others, according to The Indianapolis Star.
Sen. Ron Alting said, "If a company like that wants to offer that benefit to those individuals, I want to at least make sure we have those out there in the 21st century." However, Rep. Eric Turner said the ban would not have any effect on domestic-partner benefits and that the companies' concerns are unfounded.
