Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, who is suspected of disclosing classified government information to WikiLeaks, is being relocated from Quantico, Va., to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.
Army officials speaking anonymously with the Associated Press said the Pentagon will officially announce the move on Wednesday.
Manning, who is gay, has been held in a single-occupancy cell at a Marine base in Quantico under maximum security. According to reports, he is stripped down nightly and forced to wear a suicide-proof smock to sleep each night.
The change in quarters comes after several, including Amnesty International, former State Department official P.J. Crowley, and U.N. torture investigator Juan Mendez, have spoken out against the conditions in which Manning is being held.
