Nevada's state senate has approved two of three bills aimed at protecting the rights of transgender people.
Senate bills 368 and 331 would outlaw discrimination against transgender people in housing and public accommodations. On Monday the bills passed by votes of 13-8 and 11-10.
Another bill, which would make it a hate crime to attack someone based on gender identity or expression, failed 10-11. Sen. John Lee, a Democrat, joined 10 Republicans in opposing that bill.
The bills will now head to the assembly, which recently voted 29-13 in favor of legislation that would ban employment discrimination against transgender people.
