Folio Names The Advocate's Managing Editor to Power Millennial List

Folio has ranked the The Advocate's managing editor as one of this year’s most prominent young people in media.

The esteemed magazine and online media resource has included Michelle Garcia in its 2014 list of the 20 in Their 20s Honorees, recognizing her outstanding work as overseer of one of the most prominent LGBT news websites.

Garcia has served as the managing editor, overseeing online coverage, since September 2013. Previously, she held the position of commentary editor, and she continues to write weekly op-eds that address topics ranging from sports to race to bisexuality.

The 29-year-old writer has worked in the editorial department of The Advocate since October 2006. She is the recipient of a 2014 NLGJA Award for Excellence in Multimedia for her series on “The State of Pride in Sports.” She was also among the nominees for the 2014 Maggie Awards, given by the Western Publishing Association.

In addition to her work with The Advocate, Garcia is a staff writer for Top Story! Weekly, a weekly news comedy show at the Improv Olympic theater in Los Angeles.

Other 2014 20 in Their 20s honorees include Pete Cashmore (CEO, Mashable), Rachel Rosenfelt (executive producer, Gawker Media), Alex Burns (senior political reporter, Politico), Callie Schweitzer (digital innovation director, Time), Rebecca Fontenot (editor in chief, San Antonio Magazine), and David Averbach (CEO, Mango Life Media).

The honorees will be celebrated at an awards luncheon October 21 at the Marriott Marquis in New York, just prior to Folio’s Media Next Conference. For the complete 20 in Their 20s list as well as the 2014 Folio: 100 honorees, visit MediaNextShow.com.
