Yellowjackets Season 2 Trailer Highlights the Cost of Survival

The cast of Showtime's Yellowjackets

The Emmy-nominated series returns for its second season March 24, but you can enjoy the new trailer today.

Showtime has released the debut trailer for season 2 of the acclaimed thriller series Yellowjackets.

The first season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets was hugely successful, earning a coveted 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and seven Emmy nominations. With more than 5 million average weekly viewers, it became the second most streamed series in Showtime history.

It also found an audience among LGBTQ+ viewers, who praised the show for its queer themes and representation. With LGBTQ+ actors Nicole Maines and François Arnaud joining the star-studded cast, it looks like the series will remain thoroughly queer in its second season.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets tells the story of a high school girls’ soccer team that survives a harrowing plane crash, only to be stranded in the remote Canadian wilderness. The series bounces back and forth between 1996 — when the plane crash took place — and the present day, which shows the survivors continuing to work through the trauma of their pasts.

The second season picks up two months after Shauna gave Jackie the cold shoulder, during which time the health and psyches of our Yellowjackets have rapidly deteriorated. If the new trailer is any indication, things will get much worse for the girls before they get better.

The trailer debuts a new song from Florence + the Machine, a suitably moody cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl.”

“I’m such a huge fan of Yellowjackets and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a ‘deeply unsettling’ way for the show,” Florence Welch shared about “Just a Girl” and Yellowjackets. “We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone who’s first musical love was pop punk and Gwen Stefani, it was a dream job.”

In addition to the new LGBTQ+ cast members, Lauren Ambrose and Simone Kessell have joined Yellowjackets as series regulars. Queer actor Jasmin Savoy Brown will reprise her role as Taissa Turner, while Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) has come aboard for a season-long guest arc.

Yellowjackets season 2 premieres March 24 at 9 p.m. Eastern on demand and on streaming for Showtime subscribers.
