Iceland Legalizes Gay Marriage

Johanna Sigurdardottir 201005 x390 (getty) | ADVOCATE.COM

The nation of Iceland, which is the only country with an openly gay prime minister, voted unanimously on Friday to legalize same-sex marriage.

The Althingi parliament voted 49-0 to change the wording of its marriage legislation to include same-sex couples.

Gunnar Helgi Kristinsson, a political scientist at the University of Iceland, told Reuters that the country is fairly pragmatic, and that the international press made a bigger deal out of the sexual orientation of lesbian Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir than the domestic news outlets.

Gay marriage, Kristinsson said, "has not been a big issue in national politics — it's not been controversial."

The Protestant church of Iceland has not yet decided whether to allow gay and lesbians to marry in its buildings.

I'm not surprised they legalized same-sex marriage. (I was more awed back when I found out they had a lesbian prime minister.) But what really does shock me is that their parliament voted 49-0! Not a single "No" vote! That's just amazing....that right there says a lot about the country.

It would be nice if the USA, would pay attention to what is going on in the world regarding gay marriage, and/or gays in the military, for example Israel which has a strong religious influence in political voice still permits gays to serve in the military as do many European nations. However, the US, while not condoning the murder of gays, well, I guess there are exceptions, seems to prefer to take its cue from Arab countries, which when not killing gays for being gay, puts them in jail. I wonder how long it will take for the US to come into the 21st century. We talk about bringing democracy to the Arab nations, but we can't seem to grant equal rights to gays, instead the concept of equal rights has taken on the guise of "special privileges, " or pushing sexuality down peoples' throats.

What an inspiring story- if only the Australian Government would show the same maturity, leadership and decency. I am concerned to see how much hate some people have within them- they musn't be able to enjoy much in their life if they can get so angry about something like two adults wanting to commit to each other.

Marriage is a committed relationship between two adults. Unfortunately, this definition angers the "family values" crowd in the US, as it endangers the very legality of the things they enjoy so much - pedophilia, polygamy and bestiality.
