State Official Bullies College Student

Chris Armstrong (pictured, right), the gay president of the University of Michigan's student government, has found himself the target of cyberbullying by one of the state's top law enforcement officials.

Assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell (pictured, left) runs a blog focusing on Armstrong, who has campaigned to stop tuition hikes, expand gender-neutral housing for transgender students, and mitigate underage drinking by keeping dining halls open later, according to WXYZ News.

Shirvell has described Armstrong as a "Nazi-like" recruiter for "the cult that is homosexuality." He also claims Armstrong aims "to promote the radical homosexual agenda at the University of Michigan and to use his position to promote that cause." He has also featured a photo of Armstrong with a swastika added to his face, calling him "Satan's representative on the Student Assembly."

Shirvell was involved in campaigning for state attorney general Mike Cox, who has initiated a statewide agenda to stop cyberbullying.

“I don't agree with Mr. Shirvell's tactics, his judgment, or his word choice, but nonetheless I recognize his non–work-related blog is protected by our Constitution," he said in a statement to WXYZ News.

As a simple statement of fact, I am a student body president at the nation's largest university and I am openly gay. I am disheartened by the actions of the Michigan State Attorney General’s office for not nipping this problem in the bud as soon as it appeared. As an elected public servant and a state employee, I am held to a higher ethical standard as should be the case with Mr. Shirvell. I have a moral and fiduciary duty to the state and the university not to engage in actions that could damage the reputations of either body, or expose them to financial liability. Andrew Shirvell has violated the public trust by engaging in such reprehensible activity. His public stalking and online bullying do nothing to further the political dialogue while damaging the reputation of the office he holds. His website is full of ad hominem attacks, petulant name calling, spelling and grammatical errors, as well as wildly outlandish statements such as: “Armstrong, (is) a militant homosexual activist who would probably tattoo a rainbow "pride" flag across his forehead - if he could get away with it.” These comments and actions are unbecoming a state official and a public role model. I urge the Attorney General and the Governor of the great State of Michigan to restore honor and decency to their office by asking for the resignation of Mr. Shirvell.

This is not the first time Shirvell has been rabidly anti-gay. http://michiganmessenger.com/2932/assistant-ag-insults-gay-conservatives-too I feel bad for Mr. Armstrong. He's clearly a bright, resourceful, successful guy (pretty cute, too) that has found himself at the centre of this nutter's attention for no other reason that he's gay. This will affect Shirvell's job performance and credibility. He'll go before a judge who may be thinking "isn't this that whacko that was on CNN?" and introduce unintentional bias into a trial. Same for potential juries, and if they give juries instructions to ignore any press coverage of Shirvell, that just puts it in their minds. The people of the state of Michigan are not, and cannot, be given justice with this man arguing on their behalf.

I just saw this story on CNN. Andrew Shirvell's interview with Anderson Cooper left me with the feeling that Shirvell is,.......gay. I can't say what it was that caused me to feel this. But I felt it. Then I saw comments here. Apparently others felt it too. What was it? Maybe this is true....or not. I don't know. What is true is that we are a diverse people, and everyone, no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation, must be respected. Shirvell should lose his job.

Wow. Lemme guess. Andrew Shirvell, an assistant attorney general in the Michigan Attorney General’s office, gets turned down. Someone mentioned shrivel instead of Shirvell. Clearly some unresolved homosexual tendencies here on Shirvells part. Why else is he threatened? Why is hate speech ok because it's after hours? Clearly when someone acts this way, any other judgement is called into question. The best phrase for Shirvell, from Michigans point of view, is "would you like fries with that?".

What is it with people lately comparing everything to the Nazi's? I think it does more to show there lack of intelligence. Doesn't a public official have enough to worry about than to slander a college student trying to make a positive change?

I'd be curious to know what the HRC, the NGLTF, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Anti-Defamation League, among others have to say about this "Public Servant". I would also beg to differ with the Attorney General. Any individual's private behavior can and does affect whether or not that person may be fit for a job. Mr. Shirvell's behavior clearly demonstrates that he is not.

Shirvel is a bad public server and he is using the force of the State against a single youth. It is an injustice, and the real "predator" is Shirvel, a religious fanatic, homophobe and a racist himself, who is promoting the "Homophobic Agenda". Is time to open a legal process against Shirvel, people like him is making a big damage in the public institutions. He deserves being fired from his job.
