A Fort Worth, Texas, high school student was given in-school suspension after commenting Tuesday in a classroom that because of his religion, he believes homosexuality is wrong.

Dakota Ary, 14, made the comment to another student in his German class during a discussion on religion and the Bible in Germany, according to the Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate. Ary, a freshman, said, "I'm Christian, and to me, being homosexual is wrong." He told the channel that the teacher then "got mad, wrote me an infraction, and sent me to the office."

The referral said that Ary's comment was out of context and unprovoked, and that "it is wrong to make such a statement in public school."

Attorneys from Liberty Counsel, a conservative legal assistance group, are working with school administrators, who reduced his punishment to one day of suspension from two days after talking to the attorneys. He will also be kept from attending his German class for the rest of the week to prevent retaliation against him. He returned to his other classes Wednesday.

"I didn't say it to be rude to anyone," he said, "I said it like how I should believe it."
