Suspect in gay
community center attack arrested
Police have arrested a man suspected of vandalizing and making death threats against a gay and lesbian community center in Berkeley, Calif., the Associated Press reports.
The suspect, who was not identified, showed up Saturday at the Pacific Center for Human Growth, asking about its suicide hotline. Arousing suspicion among staff members, he was placed in a psychiatric facility under suicide watch, after which police were contacted.
The center had reported an incident February 3 in which a man kicked in the glass front door of the facility, causing the glass to splinter and spread across the lobby and reception area.
Juan Barajas, executive director of Pacific Center, told the AP that e-mail threats allegedly made by the suspect were targeted to staff and youth program members. He also said the suspect was likely a former client who participated in the community center's youth programs about 10 years ago. (The Advocate)
