Arrest Protesters at AIDS Conference

Ugandan police arrested three gay rights activists who stormed an AIDS conference in Kampala on Wednesday.

Ugandan police arrested three gay rights activists who stormed an AIDS conference in Kampala on Wednesday.

The two women and one man were protesting the U.N.-sponsored conference because of recent comments made by the government on homosexuality, which is illegal in the east African nation.

Uganda's government said this week it will not focus any HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs on gays because of insufficient funds.

"Two young women and a man stormed the conference venue uninvited and we had to arrest them," senior police commander Byakagaba Abas told Reuters at the meeting in Kampala.

The three protestors, members of the group Sexual Minorities Uganda, were charged with "promoting homosexuality."

"We have detained them for promoting homosexuality, which is a serious offence in our laws," Kampala police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga told Agence France-Presse. "Depending on the investigation and evidence available, these people may be imprisoned for life." (The Advocate)
