Saturday night's Writers Guild of America awards, held at the Century Plaza in Los Angeles and hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, honored Milk writer Dustin Lance Black with the award for Best Original Screenplay. The Milk screenplay triumphed over Burn After Reading, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Visitor, and The Wrestler.

In accepting the award, Black said, "I want to thank God for making my dreams come true, and I want to thank God for giving us Harvey Milk." Black, who is gay, also wrote and directed the film The Journey of Jared Price and has worked on the television series Big Love.

Milk, which chronicles the political life and tragic murder of gay rights activist Harvey Milk, is also up for eight top prizes at the Academy Awards on February 22. Black has his first Academy Award nomination, also for Best Original Screenplay. (Advocate.com)
