Madge Booed for Supporting Gypsies, Gays

Before singing "You Must Love Me," which she sang for the 1996 musical Evita, Madonna addressed the on one of her concert stops in Romania crowd about discrimination against some of the region's most marginalized groups.

"We don't believe in discrimination against anyone," she said. "We believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone...right? Gypsies, homosexuals, people who are different -- everyone is equal and should be treated with respect, OK? Let's not forget that."

Her statement was met with both jeers and cheers to a crowd of about 60,000 in Bucharest. According to the Associated Press, as many as 2 million Gypsies, or Roma live in the Romania. Roma were slaves in the country until the 19th century, and have since been unable to fully integrate into society. It is estimated that half of Europe's 12 million Roma have been subjected to an act of discrimination in the past year.
